Basic Sword and Shield

2. Stances/Footwork
Have them all get into stance before going into this part of the lecture so they can compare what they do with
what is right. Having a volunteer to help demonstrate will make life easy.
3. Sword Placement and Blocking.
· Grips:
(Ask for volunteer to show basic sword placement.)
4. Shield placement.
(Drill the mirror movement exercise with shield)
5. Combat Basics.
> Attack and Defense:
> Shots (Golden Four):
>> High Cross:
>> Butt Wrap
>> Shoulder Wrap
>> Inside hip shot (Money shot)
· Break Out: Pair people up and practice for a few minutes. Go around and correct/critique/compliment.

- Body Position: Importance of posture
- Kick all hunchers in groin.
- Take time now to go through and correct everyone's stance.
- Offensive vs. Defensive: why offensive is not being taught.
- Movement: Drill movement in each direction (mirror exercise)

- Keeping range when you have more reach

- -Quickly work through everyone to make sure correct sword placement.
- -Importance of returning back to sword position and blocking with sword on sword side.
- -Emphasize the importance of blocking sword side with sword. Not shield.
4. Shield placement.
- -Basic how to and how not to
- -Shield size

5. Combat Basics.
> Attack and Defense:
- General concept: Returning to stance
- General concept: Having a plan
- General concept: Attack person, not weapon.
- General concept: Precision, not power or speed.
> Shots (Golden Four):
>> High Cross:
- -Why does the high cross work? (ask this)
- -Explain the high cross.
- -Incorrect way to throw a high cross.
- -Correct version.
>> Butt Wrap
>> Shoulder Wrap
>> Inside hip shot (Money shot)
· Break Out: Pair people up and practice for a few minutes. Go around and correct/critique/compliment.
> Levels & Range:
- -Closing: High cross protection, relying on your solid defense.
- -Explain benefits of different levels/ranges
- -Demonstrate with the shots.
- -Delivering: Never bend at waist. Use your knees to get low.
- -Leg shots: Why turtleing is retarded, how to incorporate levels, and how to destroy turtlers.
· Break Out: Pair people up and practice for a few minutes. Go around and correct/critique/compliment. Use the Golden
Four.

7. Practicing at home:
- -Importance of practice on a constant basis.
- -Some practice routines that help with shot definition and accuracy. Punching bag.
- -Block Strike drill w/ shield.
- -Importance of finding multiple opponents on a consistent basis.
- -Drills for foot work: jump rope.
